For more than a century, we've been doing more for our customers.

It all started on March 1, 1898. First Citizens, then known as the Bank of Smithfield, opened for business. Although some people doubted that the first bank in Johnston County, N.C., would even survive, thanks to a growing agricultural economy it actually thrived.

While much has changed over the years, the things that have made First Citizens one of the best in the business continue to this very day. We continue to invest in new products, services, and technologies. And rest assured, we still maintain the set of core values that have guided our company and our culture from day one.

We now serve customers in more than 200 cities and towns in North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. Yet even with our growth, we maintain a tradition of sound financial principles that began in Eastern North Carolina. When our founders opened our first branch in 1898, they couldn't have imagined the shape the bank would take a century later. But they would be proud that we've remained true to our roots and retained a long-term, personal approach to banking that puts our customers first.
